About

Hi! We're Katrina and Taylor, and we're the goofballs behind this tiny piece of the internet which we've dubbed Flour & Steel.

Flour & Steel represents the two aspects of cooking we both appreciate – ingredients and equipment. We try to be conscious of the tools and ingredients we use in the kitchen; looking for great tools second hand has been Taylor's hobby for a few years, while Katrina is passionate about the ingredients we cook with.

When the two of us independently started our own kitchens a few years ago, we took very different routes. Katrina did the classic basic Bed, Bath and Beyond approach all in one go, while Taylor hunted for specific pieces from thrift stores and Craigslist to stock his kitchen toolbox with, one piece at a time. We've learned some things from both methods, and wanted to share our findings with other home cooks just starting to build kitchens of their own for the first time.

Taylor: born and raised a southern Kentucky boy, he loves to venture into different types of cuisine and is all about nailing techniques for how to make new dishes. His favourite style of cooking is the "one pot meal", which not only produces enough food for dinners throughout the week but also makes doing dishes at the end of the night super easy. When he's not cooking, he's either riding his bike to the nearest thrift store, playing video games, or kicking back with a beer and a good book.

Katrina: once a city gal from Toronto, she followed her sweet tooth and moved to Seattle on a mission to try every flavour on the Molly Moon's ice cream menu. No surprise that her favourite meal of the day is dessert and her favourite thing to bake is donuts (mainly because she's 110% sure that she'll burn down a building if she ever tries to fry them). When she's not baking or eating ice cream, she's can be found biking and thrifting with Taylor, reconstructing thrifted finds into new pieces for her closet, or playing board games.

Let us know if you ever have any questions!

Thanks for visiting!
